Muhammad Isma'il (Persian painter, born ca. 1814)
|
Note: Muhammad Isma'il is described as the most talented and creative member of the Isfahani family; he was the younger brother of Najaf 'Ali. One of the earliest of his signed works is a pen box (1848) for Manuchihr Khan, the governor of Eṣfahān. In 1850 Isma'il began working for Nasir al-Din (reigned 1848-1896) of the Qajar dynasty (1779-1924). His masterpiece is a casket (1865) that used western techniques to present figures in their environment. His unique style is easily distinguished from other Iranian artists. His Farsi nickname was Farangī-sāz, meaning "the Europeanizer." |
