Burges, William (English architect and designer, 1827-1881)

Note: Born 2 December 1827; died 20 April 1881. In 1844, Burges articled at the London office of architect Edward Blore. In 1849, he moved to the office of Matthew Digby Wyatt to work as an "improver." In 1851, Burges formed an informal partnership with Henry Clutton, referred to by RILA as "Clutton and Burges". In 1856, Burges was responsible for the restoration of the cathedral at Lille, France. He is known for his flamboyant and original High Victorian architectural style. His work was influenced by a variety of styles and periods, notably French 13th-century Gothic architecture. He is perhaps best known for his work at Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch for his patron, the Marquess of Bute. He is also noted for his inventive and elaborate designs for the decorative arts, particularly furniture and metalwork. Shute was friendly with the leading artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and employed a number of Pre-Raphaelite artists and craftsmen for his decorative work. British architect.
