|
Note: English tapestry factory located on the Thames in Surrey, England. Established in 1619 by Sir Francis Crane. Francis Cleyn was the chief designer in 1626. Prominent patrons included the Crown, George Villiers and the Marquis of Buckingham (later the 1st Duke of Buckingham). The firm was plagued with financial difficulties, and was purchased by the Crown in 1638, to style the King's works. However, continuing problems forced the factory to close in 1703. |
