Varble, Stephen (American performance artist, 1946-1984)
|
Note: Active primarily in lower Manhattan in the 1970s. Through guerrilla performance works, he investigated commerce, gender roles, and the institutions of art and celebrity. In costumes created from trash, Varble staged unauthorized gallery tours through SoHo and protest performances in banks, stores, and in the street. He ceased his public performances in 1977 and commenced work on a longform video piece that he left unfinished at his death. |
