Hyginus, Pope (Greek pope, died ca. 142)
|
Note: According to the Liber Pontificalis, Hyginus was a Greek by birth. The further statement that he was previously a philosopher is probably founded on confusion arising from the similarity of his name to that of two Latin authors. His pontificate witnessed the beginning in Rome of the cults formed around belief as esoteric knowledge of spiritual truth, which came to be known as the Gnostic heresies. |
