D'Annunzio, Gabriele (Italian writer, political leader, 1863-1938)
|
Note: Son of a politically prominent and wealthy Pescara landowner, D'annunzio was major Italian poet, novelist, dramatist, short-story writer, journalist, military hero, and political leader. He was acclaimed for his exploits during WWI and In September 1919 he gathered his followers and occupied the disputed seaport of Fiume, in defiance of the Treaty of Versailles. He ruled there as a dictator for a year and created what was to become a blueprint for Italian fascism. He later became an ardent Fascist and was granted a title and national edition of his works by Mussolini, but was marginalized by the regime and was not directly involved in the government of fascist Italy. |
