Struth, Thomas (German photographer, born 1954)

Note: In 1976, Struth studied with the photographer Bernd Becher at the Fine Arts Academy, Düsseldorf. In 1976, Struth began working on the series "The Architecture of Streets" and "The Panorama of the City", which documents urban planning patterns in Düsseldorf, and Berlin, West Germany, Paris, France and New York City, New York, United States. In 1977, Struth documented working districts in East London, England, United Kingdom in his series "Tower Hamlets". From 1979 to 1982, Struth produced "Rhine Port Düsseldorf", a documentary of the industrial area of Düsseldorf previous to its sanitation and partial demolition. From 1979 to 1981, Struth photographed "Beaugrenelle", a modern housing complex in Paris, France. Struth photographed the streets of small towns in Oberfranken, West Germany, in 1983. His objective portraits influenced by the work of his teachers, Bernd and Hilla Becher. His most famous recent works are his "Museum Photographs," which are studies of the relationship among works of art, their viewers, and institutional spaces.
