Grignion, Charles, II (English painter, 1754-1804, active in Italy)

Note: He was the nephew of the engraver Charles Grignion (1717-1810), and was drawing professionally by the age of 11. He studied with Giovanni Battista Cipriani; he exhibited portraits and mythological subjects until 1782, when he left for Rome on a Royal Academy travel scholarship. Grignion remained in Italy for the rest of his life, devoting himself to the study of the antique and the production of large historical compositions. Comment on works: Portraits; History
