Record Type: Person
Filla, Emil (Czech painter, printmaker, and sculptor, 1882-1953)

Note: Student at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague. In 1903 he travelled to Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and France, studying the works of the old masters. His style at this time evolved from Post-Impressionism to a more Expressionist use of color. As a member of The Eight, he exhibited in that group's first exhibition in 1907. In 1911 he edited a magazine promoting cubism, and reproduced images of Picasso's paintings. In 1914 Filla was in Paris, but the outbreak of war drove him to Holland, where he spent a year painting still-lifes in a cubist style. In 1915 he joined the Maffia group in Amsterdam, a Czech-Slovak political resistance movement. After WWI Filla became Secretary at the Czechoslovak Embassy. The 1930s brought a surrealist influence to his work. He exhibited in Poesie 1932, an exhibition in Prague that heralded the arrival of Surrealism to the region. He was arrested in 1939 and deported to Buchenwald concetration camp, where he spent the remainder of the war. He returned to Czechoslovakia in 1945. He was appointed professor at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague to teach painting. He continued painting genre scenes in a cubist style. The government installed his collection of Chinese art, Renaissance bronzes, African sculpture and Czech folk art in a wing of Peruc castle, northern Bohemia. After 1945 the Communist government prevented his work from being recognized due to its 'bourgeois formalism.'
