Cosmati family (Italian marble workers, mosaicists, 12th-14th centuries)

Note: Roman family or otherwise related group of architects, sculptors, mosaicists, and creators of opus sectile church floors and facades. Their name is commemorated in the genre of Cosmati work, the technique of opus sectile ("cut work") formed of elaborate inlays of small triangles and rectangles of colored stones and glass mosaics set into stone matrices or encrusted upon stone surfaces. While many other artists produced such works, they continue to be known by the name of this family. The precise genealogy of the family members is not certain.
