Yi Deokseong (Korean calligrapher and government official, 1655-1704)
|
Note: Yi Deokseong was a calligrapher and civil official of the mid-Joseon period. His grand-uncle Yi Gyeongseok (1595-1671), his maternal grandfather Jo Munsu (1590-1647), and his uncle Yi Jeongyeong (1616-1686), who raised him, were all civil officials famous for their calligraphy. Inheriting this family tradition, Yi Deokseong also excelled at the art. He forged friendships not only with literary intellectuals who had the same political leanings as his, including Nam Yongik (1628-1692), Shin Iksang (1634-1697), and Hong Suju (1642-1704), but also with others from a different political background, such as Kim Changhyeop (1651-1708). Following his family calligraphy tradition, Yi employed the style of Wang Xizhi. He was well versed in regular script, but he produced calligraphic works in running and cursive scripts as well. This family tradition of skillful calligraphy was passed down to descendants including Yi Jinsun (1679-?) and Yi Gwangsa (1705-1777). |
