Geras Painter (Attic vase painter, active 480-ca. 470 BCE)
|
Note: The Geras Painter worked in Athens in the early 5th century BCE, decorating vases in the red-figure technique. He specialized in pelikai but also decorated other shapes. Several of his surviving vases depict Herakles, satyrs, and herms. Although the Geras Painter was not a very skilled draftsman, his paintings are often whimsical and imaginative. As with most ancient artists, the true name of the Geras Painter is unknown; his work is identified only by stylistic traits. He takes his name from a pelike in the Louvre showing a scene of Herakles attacking Geras, the personification of old age. |
