Penthesilea Painter (Attic vase painter, active ca. 460-ca. 440 BCE)
|
Note: Chief painter of the Penthesilea workshop, which was the most productive cup workshop that flourished into the Classical Period. His work varied, retaining a sketchy quality, primarily depicting youths, athletes and horses. His name vase in Munich depicts the fight between Achilles and the Amazon queen Penthesilea in the tondo; the composition was influenced by monumental wall paintings of the same subject in Athens. The Penthesilea Painter was also an accomplished white-ground painter as well. |
