Mellon, Andrew W. (American financier, patron, 1855-1937)
|
Note: The founder of the National Gallery of Art. Having entered his Pittsburgh family's banking business at age nineteen, Mellon became a highly successful financier and industrialist. He served as Secretary of the Treasury from 1921 to 1932 in the cabinets of Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover and then acted as ambassador to Great Britain in 1932-1933. He is noted as one of the nation’s foremost art collectors, Mellon gave a collection valued at 25 million dollars to the US government in 1937. Mellon donated another 15 million dollars to build the National Gallery of Art, opened in 1941, to house the collection. |
