Medalie, Ann (Israeli painter, born Latvia, 1896-1991)
|
Note: Born in Haseldorf, Latvia to an Orthodox Jewish family. The family was expelled to Lithuania when she was young. During World War I, she lived with her family in Berdyansk near the Sea of Azov. In 1921, she emigrated to the United States and settled in Chicago with her family. She studied briefly at the Chicago Institute of Art. In the first half of the 1920s, she moved to Los Angeles and San Francisco, where she painted and worked in interior design. In 1939, she worked as Diego Rivera's assistant at the World's Fair in San Francisco.During this time, she met other Mexican artists. In 1942-1948, she visited Mexico frequently and showed her work there. In 1948, she moved to South Africa and then to Rhodesia. In 1951, she immigrated to Israel, settling in the Safed artists colony in 1952. In her later years, she lived in a home for the elderly in Kfar Shmaryahu. Her home was an open gallery to the public. She travelled extensively. Medalie painted mainly landscapes and still-lifes, some of them incorporating elements of fantasy. |
