Society of Independent Artists (American and European artists' society, active 1916-1944)
|
Note: Group of American and European artists established in New York in December of 1916 with the intention of sponsoring regular exhibitions of contemporary art without juries or prizes. It was modelled on the French Société des Artistes Indépendants, a society founded in 1884 that exhibited until World War I. The SIA held its first exhibition, The Big Show, in April of 1917; it was the largest exhibition in American history (about 2500 paintings and sculptures by 1200 artists) and also one of the most controversial. Although later exhibitions were not as sensational, annual exhibitions accompanied by catalogues continued under John Sloan's long tenure as president from 1918 until 1944 when the last exhibition was held. The SIA's commitment extended to all art forms: film screenings, lectures, poetry readings, and concerts supplemented its exhibitions. |
