Record Type: Person
Boethos of Chalkedon (Greek sculptor and metalworker, active ca. 2nd century BCE)

Note: He is known from a signed herm, now in Tunis. The lettering of the inscription suggests a date in the 3rd century BCE, but the classicizing features of the herm and other stylistic characteristics suggest the 2nd century BCE, when the signature of "Boethos of Chalkedon" is also found on the bases of a portrait of Antiochos IV (reigned 175-164 BCE) on Delos and of a portrait at Lindos (ca. 184 BCE). Thus it is generally believed that these works are all by the same 2nd-century BCE artist. There are, however, at least 3 other ancient Greek sculptors named "Boethos." The precise role of Boethos of Chalkedon as sculptor is unclear. In bronze casting, numerous versions of a work can be produced from the same mold, making the precise role of Boethos unclear. The signature of Boethos may mean that he created the original mold from which slightly different castings were made, or it may mean that he was the artist who customized the molds with the more elaborate detailing found on some works.
