Master of the Bambino Vispo (Italian painter, active in the early 15th century)
|
Note: The appellation "Master of the Bambino Vispo" was devised by the scholar Osvald Siren in the early 20th century to refer to the artist who created several works similar in style, including three altarpieces of the Madonna and Child in the Accademia in Florence, in the Doria Pamphili in Rome, and in the Museum of Art in Philadelphia. Siren chose the name, which means "Master of the Lively Baby," due to the unusually vivacious expression and movement of the Christ Child in the paintings. Many of the works formerly attributed to the Master of the Bambino Vispo are now believed to be by Gherardo Starnina, but the entire oeuvre formerly attributed to the Master of the Bambino Vispo has generally not been identified with Starnina; thus some of this anonymous master's work is yet to be associated with a known artist. |
