Sophilos (Attic vase painter, active ca. 580-570 BCE)
|
Note: The earliest Attic vase painter whose proper ancient name is known. His style and interest in narrative subjects presages the C Painter, whose early career overlapped with Sophilos' late career. A fragment from a dinos by Sophilos depicts a famous but rarely painted subject: the funeral games for Patroklos. The composition is unique as well: a grandstand filled with wildly gesticulating people watch a chariot race. Sophilos signed the fragment twice. |
