Joly de Lotbinière, Pierre-Gustave (Swiss photographer and daguerreotypist, 1798-1865)
|
Note: Joly de Lotbinière was born in Switzerland and by marriage became the seigneur of Lotbinière on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, Québec. In 1839 Joly de Lotbinière was in Paris and witnessed the announcment of the daguerreotype process. He decided to purchase the necessary equipment while awaiting departure for a grand tour of Greece, Egypt and the Holy Land. While awaiting departure in Marseille, France, Joly de Lotbinière met the Paris optician and publisher Noël Marie Paymal Lerebours and agreed to work with him. Joly de Lotbinière became one of a team of daguerreotypists who travelled to various parts of the globe to photograph famous sights and monuments. Joly de Lotbinière photographed in Athens and Syros, Greece, Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt and Jerusalem for Lerebours, though his photographs of Athens, thought to be the first daguerreotypes ever taken in Greece, no longer exist except for those reproduced in Lerebours' book published in 1841-1842 called "Excursions Daguerriennes, Vues et Monuments les Plus Remarquables du Globe." Joly de Lotbinière was also the one of the first photographers to photograph the major archaeological sites in Egypt. |
