William of Sens (French architect, died 1180, active in England)
|
Note: Architect of the Gothic choir at Canterbury Cathedral from 1174 to 1179. He is known only from an account by the monk Gervase of the rebuilding of the cathedral after the fire of 1174; Gervase recorded that William was chosen from among many masters from France and England "on account of his lively genius and good reputation." He directed the project until a fall from the scaffolding in 1178 led to his retirement to France. He was also described as a "craftsman most skilled in wood and stone" who devised ingenious machines for lifting stone. William seems to have brought sculptors and glaziers with him to Canterbury. |
