Čermák, Jaroslav (Czech painter, ca.1830-1878)

Note: Known primarily as a painter of historical subjects. He studied in Belgium and France and his work reflects trends in late Romanticism, French realist painting, and the Barbizon School. He travelled to Munich, Düsseldorf, and Holland. Notable works include "The Counter-Reformation" (1854); "Hussites Defending a Farm Track" (1857), and "Dalmatian Wedding" (1875-1877), all at the Prague National Gallery, Convent of Saint Agnes. He was preoccupied with subjects from Bohemia's history such as "Abduction of Herzgovenian Women by Bashi-Bazouks" (1868), and "Episode in Montenegrine War of 1862" (1873), later travelling through Slovakia and southern Slav regions for material.
