Record Type: Person
Apelles (Greek painter, active late 4th century BCE)

Note: Active in Kos and Ephesos. Associated with Philip II of Macedon, Alexander the Great, and Ptolemy I of Egypt. No works are extant, and he is known only through literary sources. Studied under Ephoros of Ephesos and Pamphilos of Sikyon. He was famous for his portraits, particularly of Philip II and Alexander, with whom he enjoyed priveleged status. His most renowned work was probably Alexander Holding the Thunderbolt in the Temple of Artemis at Ephesos, which may have exhibited a kind of trompe l'oeil effect. He was among artists that perfected a four-color palette (black, white, yellow, red) popular in Greek painting of this period, as well as a varnish technique that protected and enhanced his works. Pliny recounts that Apelles was the first to create three-quarter view portraits, and painted many in Alexander's entourage. He is thought to have indirectly inspired the later European tradition of allegorical painting.
