Arnolfo di Cambio (Italian sculptor and architect, documented 1265, died 1302)

Note: Two phases of Arnolfo's career were formerly attributed to two different artists. Today it is held that Arnolfo is the sculptor who is documented as Nicola Pisano's pupil and who worked principally in Rome; he is also the architect Arnolfo, who worked in Florence. Giorgio Vasari, a 16th-century biographer of artists, incorrectly noted his birth date and father's name. Arnolfo is first mentioned in a document of 29 September 1265 as Nicola Pisano's assistant.
