Pius XII, Pope (Italian pope, 1876-1958)

Note: He was named by Benedict XV as apostolic nuncio to the German state of Bavaria in the Vatican’s initiative to end World War I. In 1930, he helped draft the anti-Nazi encyclical Mit brennender Sorge (“With Deep Anxiety”) in 1937. During his controversial pontificate, the Vatican was officially neutral during the World War II, maintained links to the German Resistance, used diplomacy to aid the victims of the war, lobbied for peace, and spoke out against race based murders and other atrocities. |
