Record Type: Corporate Body
Bamboccianti (Northern European painters, 17th century, active in Rome)

Note: Group of painters, although not an organized company, who were active in mid-17th-century Rome and worked in the manner of Pieter van Laer, called il Bamboccio. They specialized in bambocciate, which were small works representing trivial or base subjects related to contemporary Italian life. The artists were Dutch, Flemish, German, French, and occasionally native Italian. Although ridiculed by champions of the Grand Manner, the Bamboccianti were patronized by the Roman aristocracy and bourgeoisie; they had a profound influence on low-life painting in the Netherlands and Italy.
