Ferdinand I, Emperor of Austria (Austrian emperor, 1793-1875)
|
Note: Eldest son of the Holy Roman emperor Francis II (later Francis I of Austria) and Maria Theresa of Naples-Sicily. Said to be "feebleminded" and a victim of epilepsy, his father insisted he be the heir to the throne in order to protect the principles of succession to the monarchy. His government's affairs were controlled by a body of counselors in which the decisive influence was exercised by the chancellor Klemens, Prince von Metternich. Ferdinand abdicated in favor of his nephew, Francis Joseph, in Olmütz on 2 December 1848. |
