Record Type: Person
Kim Seoksin (Korean painter, born 1758)

Note: A painter active in the late Joseon period, Kim Seoksin served as a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo). Under the influence of Kim Eunghwan (1742-1789), he took up the painting style of Jeong Seon (1676-1759), the master of "true-view" landscape painting (jingyeong sansuhwa). He also incorporated elements of the style of Kim Hongdo (1745-after 1806), thus developing his own distinctive expressions. Most of his surviving works are paintings of real-scenery landscapes near the Hangang (river). Kim was proficient at true-view landscape painting but also produced Southern School literati paintings, bird-and-flower paintings, Buddhist and Daoist figure paintings, and ink bamboo paintings.
