Ferus Gallery (American art galley, 1957-1968)
|
Note: Influencial art gallery co-founded by artist Edward Kienholz and curator Walter Hopps in 1957 Hopps selected the artists, while Kienholz looked after the day-to-day running of the space. Artist Robert Alexander also played a central, though unofficial, role in both planning and practical matters. The gallery's attitude mirrored the Beat aesthetic prevalent in the 1950s keeping erratic hours and not emphasizing art sales. The gallery relocated across the street in 1958, and this first location is often referred to as the "old Ferus." |
