Castiglione, Baldassare (Italian writer, 1478-1529)
|
Note: Author, soldier, and courtier, best known for his book "Il libro del cortegiano" (The Courtier), which was published in 1528. It is a courtesy manual in the the form of a dialogue set over several evenings in the court of Urbino, during which participants discuss the characteristics of the ideal courtier, introduce the concept of "sprezzatura" (studied nonchalance), the desirability of using Tuscan dialect, the merits of painting over sculpture, and other topics. His appearance and his bearing demonstrating "sprezzatura" are immortalized in a portrait of Castiglione by his friend Raphael, now in the Louvre. |
