Record Type: Person
Cosimo I, Grand-Duke of Tuscany (Italian grand duke, patron, 1519-1574)

Note: Son of the famous condottieri Giovanni dalle Bande Nere from Forlì and Maria Salviati; on his mother's side, of the Medicean line. He was considered ruthless by contemporaries, but he was known as an able ruler who gave permanent form to the government of Florence, forming the disorganized fallen republic into a modern monarchical state. His career began when his distant cousin, Alessandro, duke of Florence, was assassinated, Cosimo went to Florence where he was elected head of the republic in 1537. With the approval of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, he called himself "duke." He made a prestigious marriage to Eleanora de Toledo; he forcefully acquired Siena and much other territory in Tuscany. He was crowned grand duke by Pope Pius V in 1569.
