Westra, Ans (Dutch photographer, 1936-2023, active in New Zealand)
|
Note: Born in Leiden, Netherlands, the photographer came to New Zealand in 1957 at age 21. In the 1960s, she worked as a full-time photographer for the School Publications branch of the Department of Education and the Department of Māori Affairs. She made controversial photographs of Māori families, which were frequently criticized for sustaining negative stereotypes. In 1954, her publication Washday at the Pā, depicting an impoverished Māori, was withdrawn by the New Zealand Government for fueling these stereotypes. In the 1970s, she extended her practise to the lives of all New Zealanders, including the anti-apartheid group Mongrel Mob. |
