Kitani, Chigusa (Japanese painter, 1895-1947)
|
Note: Member of the Yoshioka family, she began using her married name for exhibitions after 1919. She studied in Tokyo with Ikeda Shōen, a female painter. In 1915 she entered the studio of Kitano Tsunetomi and began exhibiting in the Bunten exhibitions. Her husband was a scholar of kabuki plays, and this may have informed her work. Chigusa founded her own painting group and encouraged many other female painters. |
