Note: Influential scholar who is noted for his emphasis on connoisseurship in his studies of art, particularly Italian Renaissance painting. His villa near Florence, Villa I Tatti at Settignano, with its collection, library, photographic library, surrounding property and a considerable endowment was left to Harvard University upon his death and is now maintained as the Center of Humanistic Studies.
