Domenico da Cortona (Italian architect and woodworker, ca. 1470-ca. 1549, active in France)
|
Note: He may have been trained by Giuliano da Sangallo. After first arriving in France in 1495 to work for Charles VIII, he probably specialized in the construction of wooden architectural models. It was only in 1532 that Domenico was paid under the title of architect, when the King commissioned a design for a new Hôtel de Ville in Paris (work completed 1628; destroyed 1871). Domenico's design was not adhered to in the first floor of the main façade but the regular plan and the Italianate detailing and elevation of the courtyard made this the first building in Paris in the Renaissance style. The columns and bays screened by arches on the ground floor of the main façade probably influenced Pierre Lescot's design for the Louvre (1546). Architect. |
