Kupffer, Elisar von (Swiss painter and writer, 1872-1942, born in Estonia)
|
Note: Born in Estonia to a German Baltic family, he studied in St. Petersburg and Berlin. He met his life partner Eduard von Mayer in 1891 with whom he established a religion called the Klarismus, dedicated to the reconciliation of dualities, including that of gender. In 1899 von Kupffer published an anthology of homoerotic literature in Berlin. From 1902 he and von Mayer were in Italy, but relocated to Switzerland in 1915. In the 1920s they transformed their Minusio villa into a place of worship, the Sanctuarium Artis Elisarion, filled with Kupffer’s paintings. |
