Chantilly Porcelain Manufactory (French porcelain factory, active ca. 1725-ca. 1789)
|
Note: Chantilly was founded in 1726 by Prince du Condé, who along with the manufacturers at Meissen, was searching for the exact formula for Chinese and Japanese porcelain. Early pieces were painted to imitate Japanese ceramics, probably copied from the prince's collection. The early works were made of soft-paste porcelain covered with an opaque tin glaze that produced a rich background for the bright enamel colors. In additions to mugs, tureens, plates, and tea services, Chantilly also produced fanciful pieces such as smiling Chinese figures beside vases or containers. After the prince's death in 1740, the factory's financial support waned, and as a result, the pieces produced were less innovative. |
