Note: Born 9 February 1890. Father of Charles Francis Murphy, Jr. (b. 1928), architect, and Robert Lawrence Murphy. Began his architectural career in the office of D.H. Burnham and Co., then joined Burnham's successor firm Graham, Anderson, Probst and White. Founded Shaw, Naess and Murphy, with Alfred Shaw and Sigurd Naess, 1937. The firm became Naess and Murphy, then C.F. Murphy Associates in 1957, and Murphy/Jahn in 1981. Organizer and first director of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, founded in memory of his earlier employer, Ernest R. Graham. Fellow, American Institute of Architects; member, Western Society of Engineers.
