Jordán, Esteban (Spanish painter, sculptor, and architect, ca. 1530-1598)
|
Note: Jordán is considered one of the best Castilian sculptors of the last half of the 16th century. Married to a niece of Inocencio Berruguete, he lived and worked in Valladolid. His first known work is a retable of Saint Eulalia at Paredes de Nava, which was begun by Berruguete. Circa 1577-1590, he made a number of sculptures and completed a retable begun by Juan de Juni at the church of Santa Maria del Mediavilla, Médina del Ríoseco. He also did the retable of Santa Maria Magdalena there. Commissions came from Medina del Campo, Alaejos, Avila, and Montserrat. Jordán is also known for alabaster reliefs and wood figures on the trascoro of Léon Cathedral. |
