Alessi, Andrea (Dalmatian sculptor and architect, ca. 1425-1504, born in Albania, occasionally active in Italy)
|
Note: Alessi studied with Marco di Pietro da Troia; he was influenced by the Late Gothic style of Giorgio da Sebenico, with whom he collaborated on Sibenik Cathedral and other work. He is best known for the baptistery at Trogir, finished in 1467, and noted for the barrel vault with acute angled coffers and the richly decorated interior, which combines Late Gothic and Renaissance styles. The sculpture styles vary, some characterized by elongated figures and complex drapery patterns and other examples influenced by Niccolo di Giovanni Fiorentino, with whom Alessi had worked at Trogir Cathedral. He is also known for contributing to the reinforcement of the walls of Split against Turkish invasion. |
