Bradley, John (American painter, active 1831-1847, from Britain)
|
Note: He is known from his signatures on works; very little of his biography is known. Between 1832 and 1836, John Bradley signed his portraits with the archaic "I" rather than "J" as "I. Bradley"; he later signed paintings "J. Bradley." He never signed his name "I.J.H. Bradley," and thus he is probably not the same artist as the person who created the more primitive portraits with that signature. He is probably the John Bradley who arrived from Ireland on 7 August 1826 aboard the ship "Carolina Ann." He was active in the New York area from 1831 to 1847, with the first painting that definitely places him in the United States being an 1832 portrait representing the New York merchant Asher Androvette. From 1836 to 1847, he was documented as a resident of New York City and was the only person of that surname to be listed in the New York City directories as a painter, as a portrait painter and sometimes as a miniature painter. |
