Record Type: Corporate Body
Bern Carnation Masters (Swiss painters, active ca. 1475-ca. 1500)

Note: The appellation comes from a series of altar paintings, produced mainly in Berne but also in Zurich, Fribourg, and Baden im Aargau, that prominently feature carnations of several types: a pair of red and white carnations, a carnation with panicle and a carnation with a stem of lavender. They do not serve to identify a single artist but rather seem to serve as an emblem for one or more painters' brotherhoods. The earliest and best of these works is a high-altarpiece depicting the Crucifixion (after 1480). The altarpiece clearly reveals a south Netherlandish training in the tradition of Rogier van der Weyden and has been distinguished as coming from 'the workshop of Bartholomüs Ruthenzweig.' It was completed by Paul Löwensprung who also used a carnation signature on his works. Another artist with a carnation signature was the Master of the Berne Altarpiece of St. John, who worked in a clear, simple compositional style. Another Carnation Master was the Berne Master of St. Beatus, named after an altar wing depicting that saint (ca. 1494). The Adoration of the Shepherds in the Kunsthaus in Zurich, also signed with a carnation, may be a work by Hans Leu the Elder.
