Du Simitière, Pierre Eugène (Swiss painter and naturalist, ca. 1736-1784, active in Philadelphia)
|
Note: Swiss portrait painter and naturalist spent time in the West Indies before arriving in colonial America in 1765. He travelled between New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and Burlington, New Jersey before settling in Philadelphia around 1770, where he acted as curator of the American Philosophical Society. He created a natural history museum and his collection of American Revolutionary War materials were left to the Library Company of Philadelphia, which shares custody of his papers with the Library of Congress. |
