Fredricks, Charles De Forest (American photographer, 1823-1894)
|
Note: Fredricks learned the daguerreotype process in New York City in 1843 prior to his departure to Venezuela. From 1843 to 1852, Fredricks produced daguerreotypes of South America. In 1843, he photographed in Venezuela, along the Orinoco River to Angostura, then on the islands of Tobago and Saint Vincent. Upon his return to Venezuela, he continued down the Orinoco River to Brazil. In Para, Brazil, where he established a gallery in 1846. In 1849, he photographed in Paraguay, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevidéo, Uruguay. In 1853, Fredricks opened a gallery in Paris, France where he also learned the collodion process. Fredricks returned to New York City in 1853, where he entered into partnership with J. Gurney. He opened his own studio on Broadway in 1855, and between 1855 and 1857, he opened a branch studio in Havana, Cuba. In 1859, Fredricks was among the first photographers to produce cartes-de-visite portraits in the United States. During the 1860s-1880s, Fredricks was one of the most prestigious theatrical photographers in New York City, New York. |
