Stillman, Marie Spartali (English painter and artists' model, 1844-1927)

Note: Stillman was a member of a wealthy Greek family living in London; she was introduced to the Pre-Raphaelite circle through another Greek family, the Ionides, known for their patronage of the arts. She was famed as a great beauty and posed for Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, Whistler, and the photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron. From 1864-1870 she was a student of Ford Madox Brown. She married an American journalist and amateur artist, W.J. Stillman; they lived in Italy and elsewhere abroad. She exhibited in London and New England; her subjects include female heads, historical scenes, landscapes, and flowers.
