Note: The city of Witten is located in a heavily wooded recreational area on the Ruhr river in the Arnsberg district of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Chartered in 1825, it touches Dortmund to the north and Bochum to the northwest. It is an industrial center that produces steel, glass, machines, coal-tar products, and chemicals. As a producer of products used in the German World War II effort, it was heavily bombed and severely damaged, but has been rebuilt as a planned modern city. Its 2004 estimated population was 103,000. |
