Note: The southwestern German town of Saarlouis is situated on both sides of the Saar river, on the edge of the Saarland coal fields, some 11 miles west northwest of Saarbrücken, near the French border with Germany. It was founded in 1680 by Louis XIV of France, and fortified by his military engineer, S de Le Prestre Vauban. It became the capital of the Saar province of France, and was the birthplace of Napoleon's general, Marshal Ney, in 1769. It was ceded to Prussia in 1815. The fortress was razed 1889. From 1936 to 1945 it was named Saarlautern. The town was mostly destroyed in World War II, but has been rebuilt. It is still a major iron and steel production center. The calculated population for 2005 was 37,663. |
