Note: The city of Herford in the Detmold district of the west-central German state of North Rhine-Westphalia is situated where the Werre river joins the Aa river. By 789 it had developed around Benedictine convent founded in the 8th century and was confirmed by the Holy Roman Emperor Louis the Pious in 823. It joined the Hanseatic League in 1547. Brandenburg ruled it from 1647, Westphalia from 1807, and Prussia from 1815. The 13th-century Benedictine church still stands. The modern city produces a diverse range of goods including chocolate, cigars, machinery, textiles, carpets, and metal objects. In 2004, its population was estimated at about 65,000. |
