Note: A former county in southeastern Wales, on the English border. Created in 1974 from most of Monmouthshire and part of Breconshire. In 1996 it was abolished and administrative powers passed to the county of Monmouthshire (restored with reduced boundaries) and to the county boroughs of Blaenau Gwent, Newport, Torfaen, and Caerphilly. The area was one of the major divisions of Celtic Wales; now only a small minority speaks Welsh. The local economy is divided between agriculture and iron, textile and electronic industries. |
