In 1996 it was abolished and administrative powers passed to the county of Monmouthshire (restored with reduced boundaries) and to the county boroughs of Blaenau Gwent, Newport, Torfaen, and Caerphilly. The area was one of the major divisions of Celtic Wales; now only a small minority speaks Welsh. The local economy is divided between agriculture and iron, textile and electronic industries.
